Photo Credit Jupiterimages/PhotoObjects.net/Getty Images Originated and largely produced in Kentucky, bourbon dates back to the mid-1800s. The mash which is distilled to make bourbon is required by federal law to have at least 51 percent maize corn blended with barley and wheat or rye. Federal law also mandates that bourbon be at least 80 proof to be bottled.
Alcohol is second only to fat in terms of calories per gram. Each gram of alcohol has 7 calories, the NutriStrategy website explains, to 4 calories per gram of protein or carbohydrates and 9 per gram of fat.
A 1-ounce serving of bourbon weighs 28 grams, has 10 g of alcohol and provides 70 calories.
One jigger --- a measure used by bartenders to mix drinks, and typically around 1.5 ounces --- of bourbon weighs approximately 42 g, has about 15 g of alcohol and provides approximately 105 calories.
